Haiti - How You Can Help

We are all saddened by the devastation in Haiti due to the earthquake!  How can we as individuals and a congregation reach out to those in need?

Our church is currently accepting offerings to help with the recovery efforts in Haiti. All of your gifts will be sent through UMCOR [the United Methodist Committee on Relief.]  There are no administrative costs, and 100% of your gift will get to Haiti. Please send your check to the church office or drop it in the collection plate on Sunday mornings (make payable to “WCC” and write “Haiti relief” in the memo line.)  You can read more about what the UMC is doing in Haiti at www.umc.org/haiti.

Another way that you as individuals or as families may want to be involved is to put together Health Kits for Haiti. Please follow the instructions below carefully. Bring prepared kits to the church on any Sunday or to the church office during the week.

As our opportunities to respond develop, we will keep you posted of other ways that you can help.

Health Kits for Haiti

Please follow the directions exactly.  Include all items; do not add items that are not on the lists. Extra gifts, though given with the best of intentions, render a kit unusable and must be removed.  Note: All items sent must be new!

Health Kits
1 hand towel (15" x 25" up to 17" x 27")
1 washcloth
1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz. and up)
1 toothbrush (single brushes only in original wrapper, No child-size brushes)
6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
$1.00 to purchase toothpaste
(NOTE: UMCOR Sager Brown is now purchasing toothpaste in bulk to be added to health kits before shipping to ensure that the product does not expire before they are sent.)
Place these items inside a sealed one-gallon plastic bag.

Important Kit Assembly Information

  • All items included in kits must be NEW items.
  • Do NOT include any personal notes, money or additional materials in the kits.   All emergency kits are carefully planned to make them usable in the greatest number of situations. Since strict rules often govern product entry into international countries, it is important that kits contain only the requested items-nothing more.
